Legacy Society
Recognizing and thanking those who make a commitment and assist with a church’s planned giving program is extremely important. Some individuals prefer not to be recognized publicly, and their wishes must be respected. However, the personal stories of those who provide for others through a bequest or other planned gift can be a persuasive call for others to give. A formal recognition program, such as a Legacy Society, not only thanks those who have given, it also encourages others to consider a charitable gift. A Legacy Society in your church can continue to inspire stewardship for many years to come.
There are many ways to design an appreciation program to suit the needs of your congregation. Visit the donor at home to present them with a token of appreciation. Invite donors to become a member of the church’s Legacy Society. A brochure describing a typical Legacy Society, with a response card, can be sent to past and new donors. With their permission, publish the names of new legacy society members in a special section of your church newsletter. Invite members to a special appreciation dinner once a year. Ask members to speak from their own experience about their decisions concerning financial stewardship and gift giving at a seminar, worship service, or recognition event.
Donors who feel appreciated in an ongoing way and understand the important impact their planned gift will have often expand the scope of their giving. In addition, their example to others is the most decisive force in the success of a planned giving program.
