More Than Extra Space

For Rev. Jenna Hill, pastor of First United Methodist Church of Elgin, a new building offered more than just extra space. The structure has revitalized the church by giving the congregation an opportunity to serve even more people.

“It was so sad that prior to completing the new structure our ministries were bound by our facilities,” Hill said. “We didn’t have any buildings that were less than 47 years old. And everything was always breaking.”

The new facility – 9,000 square feet – houses adult and youth Sunday school and Bible study classes, Boy Scout meetings, music camp, and a variety of lifetime-learning courses that benefit the entire community. The church was pleased to have room to begin an after school ministry, called Logos, for children as well.

Sherri MacKillop and her daughters Skylar and Falon joined the church around the time the new building was completed and now regularly attend the church’s contemporary service.  Skylar and Falon participate in Sunday school and Bible study, which MacKillop says has deeply touched the girls.

“The feeling of goodwill and love from these people is overwhelming,” MacKillop says.  “It is just a church full of God-blessed people.”

The Texas Methodist Foundation funded the loan for Elgin UMC’s new building. “With the help of the churches and individuals who investor in our Methodist Loan Fund, we can continue to help United Methodist churches and institutions grow,” said David McCaskill, Sr. Vice President of loans.
