Genesis United Methodist Church in Fort Worth knew
raising enough money to fix a leaky roof was within reach. But finding the
inertia to raise funds to purchase additional land, finish building a prayer
chapel, expand a parking lot and improve a large sanctuary’s sound system all
at the same time didn’t seem feasible.
Things changed when James Varner, Vice President of Stewardship Services for the Texas Methodist
Foundation, gave Genesis the push it needed to overcome lingering challenges
and raise more than ever expected. In fact, Varner’s effort allowed the
congregation to pass out “$1 million dollar bills” last summer to celebrate
their success.
“We knew we would could
be somewhat successful, but James prodded us to shoot for $1 million,” said
Senior Pastor Randy Wild. “Because of his expertise, we were able to make this
an outstanding campaign.”

Approaching stewardship from the Wesleyan perspective meant getting past preconceived notions about
fundraising, which was an important part of the prayer emphasis during this
campaign.
“One of the main issues here was being diligent and faithful knowing we needed to take care of these
important issues at the church,” Wild said. “Through the campaign process James
outlined, we knew we had to do our best and then trust in God.”
Genesis had prior experience with the Foundation through the loan program, taking advantage of
other stewardship services and discussions on creating a permanent endowment
for the church. Wild also participated in educational events sponsored by the
Foundation in partnership with the Alban Institute. His confidence in
continuing his congregation’s relationship with the Foundation through a major
stewardship campaign was paramount.
“I knew it would be solid, because we were dealing with the Texas Methodist Foundation.” – Spring, 2003
