Tackling three major campaigns in less than 10 years, First
United Methodist Church San Angelo proves that with a sound plan, hard work and
abundant faith, a church can do much more than you might imagine in far less
time.
“When First San Angelo was doing their initial planning for
construction and renovation, it coincided with the 100-year anniversary of the
church – they knew what had been accomplished in the past, and wondered what the
next 100 years would look like,” said James Varner, Vice President of
Stewardship Services. “They asked crucial questions about what God wanted their
church to be, and followed up with a 20-year plan that took less than 10 years
to accomplish. In that time they tripled their square footage and renovated an
entire property apart from the sanctuary. It’s just remarkable!”

The last formidable campaign this church undertook was led
by Varner, who worked diligently with First UMC San Angelo’s stewardship team
including former Senior Pastor Carl Rohlfs. “James’ work with us invited people
to make an investment in the church that will outlive them. They were given the
opportunity to experience grace in a way they might not find otherwise. He was
refreshing, energetic, optimistic and thorough, but he never failed to be candid
with his concerns to help us meet deadlines and stay on task.”
The Foundation and First UMC San Angelo built a bond
working together that, according to Rohlfs, comes with trust and confidence.
“The integrity of the Foundation trickles down throughout the campaign. Our
Foundation consultants had a connection with the people in our church that went
far beyond the campaign itself – it’s like a family connection.”
Added Varner: “We are energized by working with
congregations enthused about being more effective in sharing the good news of
Jesus Christ. We don’t see it as raising funds; we see it as facilitating
ministry.”
