Good News Is . . .

In Luke 4, Jesus inaugurates his ministry by reading from Isaiah 61:

The Spirit of the Lord is on me,
    because he has anointed me
to proclaim good news to the poor.
He has sent me to proclaim freedom for the prisoners
and recovery of sight for the blind,
to set the oppressed free,
to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor.

Afterward, Jesus rolled up the scroll and said: Today this scripture is fulfilled in your hearing.

The mission of CitySquare is to ensure this scripture is fulfilled today by continuing to proclaim “good news” to the poor. Over the years we have learned from the experts, our poor neighbors, about what constitutes “good news.”

“Good news” is:

Proximity.  Presence. Acknowledgment. Friendship. Opportunity.

“Good news” is:

Cold water. Hot food. Clean clothes. A place to call home. A job.

“Good news” is:

The gathered people of God (the church) getting to know some of God’s favorite people (the poor).

We are thankful for our partnership with TMF as together we spread good news to our neighbors in Dallas and Paris, Texas. In Dallas, good news looks like a delicious meal served by our Hospitality Program interns at the CitySquare Café. In Paris, good news is being shared in the form of a recreation center that provides services and a safe space for youth activities.

We are grateful for your friendship and hopeful that together we will continue to proclaim good news to the poor.

We’ve still got work to do.

Editor’s note about the TMF Spirit of Christmas Series:  In 2018 TMF awarded grants to more than two dozen organizations to further their courageous, spirit-filled ministries. Our Spirit of Christmas series highlights the accomplishments of six ministries that inspire us to deepen our worship, increase our giving, love our neighbors and serve our communities all year long. Read our weekly blog posts and join our conversations on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter.
